SOS Children
SOS Children is a global charity which provides orphans and vulnerable children with a
stable and positive family life. The charity protects and improves the lives of children in 125
countries, working with communities to keep fragmenting families together, and where this is not possible, building new families for children at risk. Working together with local people and organisations, SOS Children identifies needs and provides practical and emotional tools for parents and guardians to prevent family breakdown and child abandonment. With a focus on long-term sustainability, the charity empowers caregivers to reach their potential, move towards financial independence and break the cycle of poverty.
When children lose their families and have nothing and no one, the charity ensures that they can grow up in a safe environment by creating new families. Headed by SOS mothers, families live together in unique SOS Children’s Villages, which are located in the heart of communities. Children are able to enjoy their childhood and learn skills so that they can develop into active, responsible adults. The charity establishes schools and medical centres to ensure that more children have the opportunity of an education and access to quality medical care. Every year, SOS Children’s programmes reach over two million people.
As a global authority on alternative care, SOS Children works in partnership with the United Nations, advocating for the rights of all children and contributing towards the development of key child protection policies.
Ben chose SOS Children’s villages as a second charity to support their incredible work of providing houses, schools, parenting classes and other fantastic services to children across the world. These children are inspiring, just as Ben’s own daughter inspired Ben for this swim, the SOS Children overcome challenges and the impossible every day just to survive. Now Ben will help them further with the aim of fundraising £1million to ensure this charity’s work continues.

Macmillan Cancer Support
Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. One in three of us will get cancer. We are all affected by cancer. We can all help. We are Macmillan.
We are a source of support, helping with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need. It's not only patients who live with cancer, we also helpcarers, families and communities. We guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way. We fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals and build cancer care centres. But we give so much more than medical help. People need practical support at home, so we provide anything from some precious time off for a carer, to a lift to hospital. People need emotional support, so we listen, advise and share information through our cancer support specialists, website and trained professionals. People need financial help to cope with the extra costs cancer can bring, so we give benefits advice, and grants for anything from heating bills to travel costs. Together we listen, we learn, we act to help people live with cancer.
We are a force for change, listening to people affected by cancer and working together to improve cancer care. People who live with cancer are experts by experience . Together we use this knowledge to make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. This could be anything from getting a coffee machine installed in a waiting room, to bringing about changes in the law.
We fight discrimination – from challenging unfair travel costs and insurance policies to improving the national benefits system. Together we challenge the status quo, we push for change, we lead the way.
We are Macmillan. We believe we can all help.
Ben chose Macmillan because it is a charity close to his heart. Having lost his Aunty at a young age to cancer and a step-mother in the USA, who is a cancer survivor, he knows only too well how vital support, care and information is to both the individual and their family. He also believes that nothing is impossible and that challenges can be overcome, just as those diagnosed with, in remission or surviving cancer have shown: nothing is impossible. The aim is to fundraise £1million and help Macmillan with their objective to learn, create and inspire. Just as Ben hopes to inspire with his challenge and overcome the impossible of swimming The Atlantic Ocean.
