SWIM THE BIG BLUE
"Dream, live and achieve - nothing is impossible"
"Dream, live and achieve - nothing is impossible"
Ever since childhood I have dreamed of swimming across the Atlantic Ocean. Her depths, mystery and sheer power are all consuming of not only my vivid imagination but our weather, our lives and the lives of those who live in and sail upon her. As a child I used to play in her waters and watch her horse’s race up to our shores and when angry, punish the United Kingdom coastline. I have witnessed and heard stories of sharks, jellyfish, and waves as tall as a cruise ship, mysterious lights and fish that leap out of the sea to greet you. As an adult I have dived beneath her watery body and recreationally swum among her beautiful crests, the most dangerous of territories that is both unpredictable and awesome in appearance. The dream of swimming with her, free and so insignificant in the aquatic hands of Poseidon, conquering the unknown, is frightening, inspiring, exciting and now.
Since the days of discovering The New World and America’s, people have sailed across her, flown above her and rowed across her roaring surface. Today, the Atlantic Ocean still inspires adventure, conquest and the minds of all who look upon her, her secrets close and deeply buried in her dark blue depths. Hidden where whales feed, volcanoes blow and squid roam, and big seas grow their surge until capable of swelling up to swallow man and ship whole. With currents so strong they toy with our ships like a child would play with her rag dolls. This is, the Atlantic Ocean.
Swimming The Atlantic Ocean from continent to continent, is one of the greatest challenges facing the explorer today. Just as the ocean herself faces the challenge of human’s and our waste and maltreatment. In facing this challenge head on, we can inspire, drive and bring change to those who matter most through our charities whilst evidencing the care we should place upon our environment. Remember, this is not just our environment it belongs to the animals of our seas and our planet. I am entering their big blue world and with me I bring the greatest of respect and treatment, understanding and dreams.
It is my ambition and now I will realise it. Thanks to my swim coach Nicki Gwynn-Jones, my skipper Roy Finlay, and our sponsors, I am going to swim The Atlantic Ocean from Africa to Brazil in time for the Olympics 2016; will you join me?
